code 10 error hotfix
Linksys says that the code 10 error I get trying to install a wireless USB adapter is Microsoft's problem. They mentioned a "code 10 hotfix" but I cannot find it at the MS site. Running win98 first edition.

here is what ms says about error 10
"Code 10 If the device has a "FailReasonString" value in its hardware key, that string is displayed as the error message. The driver or enumerator places this registry string value there. If there is no "FailReasonString" in the hardware key, the following generic error message is displayed: This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed. (Code 10) Try upgrading the device drivers for this device. Solution button: Update Driver To resolve this error code, make sure the device is connected to the computer correctly. For example, make sure all cables are plugged in fully and that all adapter cards are properly seated. Follow the suggested solution button and update the device driver. It may be possible to remove the device and redetect it using the Add New Hardware wizard. " HTH cat

I wish it were that easy. I cannot tell you the number of times I have:
1) removed the USB PCI card hardware ( i had to add this because my PC does not have USB support). 2) Uninstalled network adapter software 3) removed USB adapter hardware to redetect. I have spent over 10 hours trying to make this work. As long as I do not reboot it is fine(once I spend the time to get the adapter recognized at all). But usually when I boot up I get the exclamation mark for the adapter in device manager. Either it is noit loading the driver correctly or it is not allocating IRQs. Thanks. |

Thanks for the help. I posted on another site and just got abuse for using w98.
I happened to defrag the PC and THAT seems to have helped! I hope so; can;t explain it though. I have been able to reboot several times without a problem! |

It sounds more like a resource problem, than a USB issue.
I would remove all com ports, all USB devices, and the NIC from device mangler, then restart, and go into the system BIOS, and disable com 2 (and com 1 if you're not using it). Set "Reset configuration data" to YES. Set "PnP Os Installed" to NO. Restart, let things reinstall. |

I have updated the BIOS and downloaded all of the windows 98 updates with no luck. After spending HOURS on this problem I've decided to buy the PCI network wireless card and try that. The heck with trying to get USB to work!
Thanks for all of the help guys. Happy New year! Ken |
