Two Operating Systems Windows ME and 2000
I own a computer that was given to me with both Microsoft Windows Me and 2000 loaded on it.
I do not remember the password and the person that gave me the computer does not remember the password for 2000. I have the computer setup to use Microsoft ME operating system. I now would like to upgrade to Windows XP and would like to know how to do this. I'm not sure what if anything I would need to do in this case as I have updated another computer that I own from ME to XP with very little effort. Help Thank you |

I assume the two OS's are on seperate partitions. If you want to keep both OS's ,you can format the partition that 2000 is on and install XP there. Or if you want to install XP by itself, just use XP to format and install.

You will have a much better running system if you do a fresh install of XP. You can do it with the upgrade XP CD if you have the ME CD and product ID.

Windows ME came installed on the computer. I will have to look for the original cd, if I can not find it will that be a problem.

If you are going to a clean install with an upgrade disk you to have a supported disk to upgrade from.

When you say a supported disk to upgrade from what exactly does that mean?

It means you have to have the CD and Product id. of the OS you are doing upgrade install from.
Keep in mind that these are required for doing a fresh install from a upgrade CD. If doing just a upgrade I do not believe they are needed. You will be better served to do a fresh install even if you have to buy a OEM XP CD rather than doing a upgrade. Chas |

What's wrong with 2000? No product activation and with SP3 it is time proven with all the updates.

Bruce I don't think there is anything wrong with 2000. His question concerned upgrading ME with XP. The PC had been given to him with 2000 that required password. He did not have the password, therefore 2000 is useless on that PC. As far as 2000, I considered it but I believe XP, being the latest will be supported the longest. If I had owned 2000 when I built this PC I would be running 2000.
