Question Config.sys & Autoexec.bat

System=Gateway G6-400 with clean install of Win98SE. It has onboard video and sound.
After finding and installing the video, sound and modem drivers and everything working ok, the pc hangs at shutdown. The display does show the "It is ok to shut your computer down" screen, but the tower just keeps running and will shutdown with the power button.
I believe I can fix this with some entries in Autoexec.bat and/or Config.sys.
Autoexex.bat has two entries with the box checked:
Set Blast XXX=AXXX |XXX DX HX PXXX T6
SET SBPCI=C:\SBPCI

Config.sys has two entries with boxes checked:
Device=C:\Windows\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE C:\Windows\EMM386.EXE /Frame=None

Is there something here that can be edited or removed?
TIA
Carl

Get the patch from MS. That is a known bug. Surprisingly it doesn't happen in all machines.

Everything there is normal in the AUTOEXEC and CONFIG. Disable fast shutdown thu MSCONFIG. Then, if that doesn't help, disable desktop themes (not sure why that fixes it, but sometimes it does), disable active desktop (again, not sure why, but it sometimes fixes it), disable power management in BIOS and in Windows. Finally, if you have an AV on there that is scanning the A drive on shutdown, you need to disable that A drive scan. With some AV programs, a patch is required to do so.

Hal,
So far just a basic machine. No AV yet. I'll check BIOS and I have Power Mgmt disabled in Win. No active desktop. I'll see about the Themes.
Thanks Hal,
Carl

andyms18a,
I've always disabled Win Power Management without this problem, but I'm open to your idea. I'll enable it and see if that fixes it.
Thanks for your input,
Carl
