welcome to PCMechanic!
it would help if you told us your operating system, and any changes you made before this problem occurred.... I'll take a shot in the dark and say it sounds like a virus I had a while back. Be sure to run a virus scan.... |

If you have Norton AntiVirus 2003, or another recent version, you can set your computer to boot from the cd-drive, put in the Norton Disk to boot from, and run a complete Emergency system scan in DOS. It takes a long time, but is very thorough. You can also visit http://www.trendmicro.com and try their online scanner called HouseCall: very up-to-date and thorough as well. Like Dan mentioned there are a few viruses that make changes to your Registry and cause the behavior you're seeing.
If you don't find any viruses, you can try a "repair" install of your IE. If you are running WinMe, you can try using System Restore (look in the "Help" files for more details) and restore to a point before your current trouble started. If you do so, you may need to reinstall programs added since then. Best of luck, and Happy New Year . . . Gary |

I would recommend updating your virus definitions before giving up on this being a virus.
