No Fat 32

My Maxtor 40GB hard drive with XP installed will not boot it says I do not have a valid Fat Partition. I've been using this drive with XP installed for months now. Somehow the Fat 32 has become corrupted, is there a way to restore the Fat 32 partiton without Fdisking and format the whole drive, as I have 3 partitions on this drive and do not want to lose the two partitions that have all my MP3's on about 6GB's in all. If I could just get in and format C: drive then I could recover those two partitions. Can it be done?

Happy New Year

Have you checked your BIOS if the drives are being recognized correctly? You could sometimes get this error if BIOS does not ID the drives correctly - battery failing, virus etc.

My BIOS has auto detect drives enabled. I am currently booting of my second hard drive which has Windows 2000 installed. I can see the Windows XP drive in My Computer, when I click on it says the drive is not formated do you want to format now. I won't repeat what I think to that.

Have you tried running a disk check and a virus check on that drive? Also might be worth your time to download a drive check utility from the mfg-er's website and running a comprehensive scan (with SMART enabled).
Flakiness with FAT32 is quite common - that is why NTFS has been provided and is getting more popular as word gets out, whats also important at this stage is making sure that there is no virus or a physical error with your drive so that you dont infect your other drives or be unaware of any problem that might crop up.

Also, have you installed any software recently that you can think of that might have anything to do with it - something like a crash recovery or a disk backup software? Check the kb of the software mfger for any similar instances as well.

I've done a complete virus scan, no virusus's found, and also run the maxtor powermax diagnostics program. Powermax says my drive has no problems. Is there anyway I can restore FAT 32 to this drive without fdisking?

The problem was cause by a faulty IDE cable. Somehow this faulty cable corrupted my Fat 32 file system. I replaced with a new one and now everything is fine. Thanks to all for your help.
