Pissed Can't get XP Home out of Classic View

My friend asked me to take a look at his computer because the Welcome Screen at startup is gone. Instead, the Logon Box appears. The control panel is in classic view. Just as if it were Win 98. I have done just about everything I could think of. I "activated" the Welcome Screen in User accounts. And I changed the theme. But it isnt going back to the default XP views. Anyone have any suggestions?? He mentioned that when I called tech support for MSN 8, they walked him thru steps that supposedly speeds up Windows and increases performance. I think I have heard of that somewhere. He said he didn't follow thru to the end, but I'm thinking he may have. Also, is there a limit as to how many different accounts you can have on XP? And I dont mean a default limit. But a limit before the system starts to act up. I was once told the recommeded limit was 3 for a system with 128MB of memory. How much truth is there to that? Appreciate the help guys!! (and gals)

Tried that...I even shut it down completely after changing it. It's like it doesnt want to accept the changes, even after clicking ok.

Hold down the windows key and press the pause break key.

Click on the Advanced Tab, In the Performance Pane click on settings choose the options want there. You may have to do it for every account, but I would start with the Admin account.

At this point i would do a complete new install.... With win-xp a new install is pretty easy and it will set up most if not all of your hardware.... That would be my next move anyway....

We'll try the new install...But he wants to keep files that are in the My Documents folder. Any suggestions as to how we could do that? They are mostly JPEGs but the comp doesn't have a
CD-R drive, just a regular CD-ROM.

Found this at Microsoft's site...........

not sure what you ended up doing, but maybe this would help someone else.

To use Windows classic folders

Open Folder Options in Control Panel.
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Folder Options.
On the General tab, under Tasks , click Use Windows classic folders.
Note

Choosing this option hides the default task links in the left pane of Windows folders, such as My Documents. It also makes the Category view in Control Panel unavailable.
