Windows Me - HELP!!!

Everything works fine until upon startup I get an error message. At this point, it doesn't load the little speaker icon in the system tray at the bottom right corner of the screen, and my computer won't make any noise. Also I am unable to play any games on my machine as I open them up, it works fine for a few seconds and then it dumps me back on the desktop. I have the latest video drivers. Anyone got any ideas.

Could it be one of the infamous ME bugs?
You might want to try searching the Microsoft database.

Btw, doesn't "rundll" have something to do with display?

I don't know what rundll has to do with. It first appeared when there was a video problem, but I fixed the problem with new video drivers, however the error hasn't gone away, and now I can't get any sound. Does Microsoft have a place where I can go to get updates and patches for Windows Me? That might solve the problem, or would system restore work? I'm open to any ideas.

I've seen a virus cause that.
If not though, did it ever work fine, is this a new build or load that has never worked?? If not was there anything you loaded or changed before this started happening. Scanreg /restore still works with WinME, but it only stores the last 5 days of registry.

Well I don't know if it could be a virus as I haven't been connected to the internet.

It is sounding more like a sound problem, what kind of sound do you have , and is it showing good in device manager, and do you have latest drivers for your particular sound installed. Maybe a removal and reinstallation of the sound card may be worth a shot.

Its a laptop so I can't take the sound card out. Would it be worth it to get the latest drivers for my sound card, see if that solves the problem?

And to answer your question, yes, the sound card shows up in the device manager, however a little speaker icon should show up in the system tray, and it doesn't show up. Now this little speaker icon links to a program that pops up with all the audio controls on it. Does anyone know what this program is called? Perhaps I could just run it, that may even be enough to fix the problem right there?

Does sound like you encountered some kind of corruption that has hosed up your sound settings or drivers. If it hasn't been too long a scanreg /restore should fix it. If you do that and see a date of a registry back before you had the problems, revert your sys back to that one. Other than that, I believe you go under Programs>Accesories>Entertainment>to find the sound volumes and settings thing, but the actual device settings are in ControlPanel>SoundandAudioDevices. HTH

So if I use the system restore feature it might work to fix my machine? Is there any chance that it will screw up and do more damage?

Yes there is the system restore if you have not disabled it and it has been creating restore points. Scanreg /restore can be done from the run box and as long as scanreg is set to run at boot than it will have , I believe the last 5 days of registries saved that you can restore back to. First thing I would do though is boot into safe mode and see if error is still there. Here is a link to Microsoft site for registry recovery.

What is "scanreg/restore"? And what do I type in the run box in order for it to appear?

I edited above POST to give you a link to read step by step to restore back to a good working system. How long has it been in trouble?? Did you try safe mode by pressing F8 right before windows starts loading on bootup??

Well, I fixed a problem with it last week. And didn't bother to try it until now, so I believe just today is when the problem started.

About the link you gave me, instead of the restore disk, can I run scanreg/restore from the MSDOS prompt in Windows?

I'm not sure either, but I always thought RUNDLL has something to do with running executable files, or basically I think it is needed for windows to run applications.

Well, I'll try all of the things that you suggested and let you know how it goes. If it doesn't work I'll be back here begging for more help!

I would just follow step by step on the Microsoft support page.
I see what you mean, they want you to use boot disk for ME, but I just fixxed my daughters Comp with scanreg /restore from the run box and it worked.

I would try removing the sound drivers and re-install them first before messing with system restores. You can really mess up your O/S if you restore and you've recently changed settings and added/removed software.

I agree that is why I would start just with going into safe mode and seeing if error still happens!

Okay, Toshiba's website doesn't offer the audio drivers for my computer so I will restart in safe mode and see what happens...

The error doesn't happen in safe mode. So what should I do?

Pretty much tells you it is a driver problem, and not an actual hardware problem. If it is sound related as it seems to be, go for what force_flow suggested, and remove and reinstall sound. What does device manager report?? Are any devices with yellow question mrks, or red exclamation points, reporting not fully functional. There has to be a place to get the drivers from, WinME may have native drivers for that sound chip.

Thanks for all your help guys, but I can't find drivers for it, and I don't really want to screw with it any longer, so I think that I am just going to pay to have it fixed.

Why pay for it to be fixed, when the guys at PCM are offering you suggestions to fix the problem.
