Question Should I upgrade to XP?

I am running win98se on my p333 celeron. Will everything "slow down" if I install XP on this machine? Does my machine have enough processing power to handle XP?

I have 96MB RAM now with more to come shortly...

Thanks!

Hi Preston,

WinXP uses more resources than Win9X so you will indeed notice a slowdown, especially with less than 128MB of RAM. If Win98 works fine, leave it as is. Otherwise, look into upgrading the CPU and RAM before upgrading to WinXP. Hope that helps.

Friend of mine has a PII333 with 96 MB of RAM. Windows 2000 ran fine, but WinXP is a bit slow. I think with more RAM it should be ok. When he upgrades his RAM I'll look again.
But Celeron333 with 96 MB RAM, I don't recommend WinXP on it.

I got one old P11 300mhz 128 Ram using Win98SE before, then I ungraded it to XP Pro, coz I thought I should be using one OS for all the 4 Comps networked which are connected via Wireless Router also. Now, I found it more faster and very stable when I had the OS changed from Win98SE to WinXP Pro.

Once you get to 128 megs and above, a p2 class chip really does well. You would be surprised.

I run WinXP on a Pentium Pro 200 - with 64 Mb ram never had any problems - but sure the Celery will choke on it as the celery has no Cache to work with - so this times ram is cheap add at least 256 mb and it will make it fly..

BTW - now I have a P4 3Ghz 512Kb cache, 512MB DDR running and I don't see any big difference to my Overclocked Pentium Pro -

I even get upset when the P4 hangs itself - the Pro Never hung on me...

Thanks for the replies....I know that sometimes a newer OS isn't always better (depending on the system you are on). Win98se is really fast (and stable) for me on this p333....

They had a good deal on XP, so I got to thinking maybe I needed it....

If you are happy with what you have and if it does everything you need to do I wouldn't change. Save the money and put it towards when you do decide to upgrade.
