can you make 2 drives look like 1 to the OS?

I have an old 30GB hard drive and would like something bigger and newer. But i dont really like having loads of different drive letters, i like it to just have the C drive, i heard a teacher say in one of my ICT classes that it is possible to have 2 drives appear as one huge drive in windows. is this possible?

Why not just let the new drive be C?

Yep it is if you get another drive as the same as yours (for example) and then use a RAID controller to get IDE RAID.
of course, being as I am, one who laughs at IDE RAID users, I wouldnt really recommend it as a good solution, and would perhaps suggest that you get another new drive that is 4 times as big as your current one .. that will be a good solution

I think win2k and winxp will do that as "dynamic" disk also.
I would have to recheck that to be sure.

What you're talking about is called drive spanning.
It is possible, though probably not cheap.
Look here: http://www.fssdev.com/products/drivespan/
The other option is to use a RAID controller and software.

I would be curious as to how well that software works, but I'm not overly intrested in paying $69.95 (probably USD too) to find out.

Dynamic disks do work in conjuction with RAID or without, something like a software spanning

dynamic disk or spanning would be what u want for that price.
2000 supports software raid(built in), but Xp does not (they took it out)

I thought you could span drives with XP, I may be mistaken as I have never tried. I don't think it's a good idea with SCSI and it's probably a bad idea with IDE.

Yes,

It is possible with W2K or XP Pro.

However, as far as I can see, the minimum you can get it down (regardless of the amount of HDs used) to is TWO drive letters - one letter for the the boot partition and one letter for spanned dynamic volume.

Here's an example using EIGHT HDs with two drive letters

http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/h...392118,00.html

Not bad, eh?
