Question Using Old drive for swap files

I have an old 3gb harddrive that I would like to use for the Windows swap files. I am using Windows 2000. Could someone tell me how to do this?

to do this log on as administrator of course, then open control panel\system\advanced\performance options. under virtual memory click change.

on the top you will see your drives listed. assuming you originally had one drive, C:, and the new (old) drive is D:, C: will already be highlited and have the page file sizes (initial and max) listed. highlight the drive you want to move the page file to (D), then under that there will be a box that says "paging file size for the selected drive", type in the initial and maximum sizes. you can use the sizes that are set for the C: drive. and click "set".

highlight C: again and delete the setting there and click "set "again and click your way out of there.

you`ll most likely have to reboot.

this will help performance if the D: drive is as fast or faster than the C: drive. you may want to split the page file between the 2 physical drives (NOT virtual, this will slow things down) so that the read/write is allocated through the heads of both drives. experiment with it.

Depending on how fast your new drive is using an older drive may not make things any faster. But using one of the newer faster drives it is a good idea to move it to it's own partition.

KHT and Tuf are right on the money.

Make sure the swap file is on a hard drive that is FAST. If your new hard drive is FAST and the old one is SLOW.... it may be better to partition the drive and put the swap file on the NEW(er) drive instead.

Spliting the swap file can be done also. It all depends how fast your "old" drive is.

Another idea is to BUY as MUCH RAM as you can!!!!!...

Ram will always be faster than paging to the swap file.

BUY MORE RAM!
