How to wipe out all traces of older video cards?
I've always wondered how I can totally get rid of all traces of old video card drivers. I know the main thing to do is to uninstall the drivers, but my main question has to do with what (and how to get to the registry) to change in the registry. After that, is there anything else that I may have missed that still needs to be tweaked? I use Windows XP Home. Thans in advance.

Before you uninstall a video card, go into device mangler, properties, driver tab, details, and write down name of each file used in the driver. Open Explorer, make sure it's set to show hidden/system files, and then search and delete all those files.
Shutdown, remove old video card, insert new, and restart. It will show up 16 color, 640x480, and then allow you to install the correct, new driver. No need to edit the registry, because if the actual files are not found, the registry will allow only basic vga to load. When you load new drivers, the appropriate entries will be written to the registry. You can then use RegCleaner (or similar) to delete the old entries. Even if you remove everything via device mangler in safe mode, the driver files (.inf, .dll, and .sys files) will still be on your computer. |

Delete the driver from safe mode, and use a reg cleaner afterwards.

andyms18a, would you like to make a bet on that?
If the registry points to one of those files as the one to use for video, it won't matter if your old card is an ATI, and you just put in a new Nvidia chipset card. Windows will (usually) try and load the ATI drivers for the Nvidia. I have seen such confusion happen with sound cards, and especially modems (always a modem!). XP will not exhibit this behaviour, but all the 9x ones will. |
