W98 SE Only Booting in Safemode, Fonts failing on Load

Last night I was reinstalling my new mobo, somehow windows decided to restore a backup registry that didn't have the new mobo drivers installed, I thought no big deal, installed the drivers and restarted(this was the second time windows magically uninstalled the mobo). Well, it never restarted, ever since last night the computer just sits on the boot up screen(I have the logo disabled) with the cursor blinking, but nothing happens. It can start in safemode though. I have tried a number of things such as checking the drive for errors, but nothing is working. So, I had it do a logged boot a couple of times and everytime the log had the same error. Everything important seems fine, but all the TTF fonts fail on load. I have checked and the fonts are in the folder, and appear to be undamaged. I wouldn't think this could be the problem, but it is all i can find wrong with the computer. Here is the boot log incase i missied something:

i wood boot from the win cd and reinstall windows over the top of your old install your programs and data will be safe

Have you tried restoring the registry to an earlier working date?

I can't install the mobo drivers in safe mode because they on a cd, and this has happened before and I can usually start up the comp just fine. Will try restoring the registry now.

Well, restoring the backup registry works at first, but then it starts doing the whole, new hardware detected...blah blah blah, so I go on with next next etc. Then it says you must restart for changes to take affect and i restart, and nothing again....well, off to try more stuff.

I was gonna try installing windows again like you said earlier, but if I start in command-prompt only mode I can't access the cd-rom drive, even though it shows it loading the driver. GRRRRRR, soo mad....

I too had this error. It could be cured by re-installing Windows, however it kept recurring almost randomly and obviously I could not keep re-installing Windows and all my software indefinitely. I trawled the web and tried all of the following alternatives, without success:

Restoring a good registry using scanregw /restore
Fixing the registry using scanregw /fix
Using "Reg Repair" software
Installing "TweakUI" and using the "Fix fonts folder" feature
Using "Fix Fonts Folder 2.0" software
Deleting the Fonts folder in MS-DOS and replacing it with a 'good' folder

After a while, it dawned on me that I might be trying to fix the symptoms rather than the root cause or causes, so I tried to apply some problem-solving logic around when the failures occurred (after a clean install of Windows) and what else had changed on the system. I isolated two possible causes and after they were addressed, I didn't get any further problems:

Firstly, the fonts always seemed to get corrupted after the computer was not shut down correctly. After the computer had been left on for some time, I noticed the display would suddenly disappear and the computer could not be rebooted. After some time, it would reboot so far but the same thing would happen. It could only be rebooted in Safe mode once it had 'cooled off' for maybe 2-3 hours, and then the fonts were corrupted. I took a look inside and although both internal fans were working, the metal heat sink on the motherboard fan was completely full of fluff. I removed the fan and blew out the fluff with some air, then replaced the fan. After that, there were no more sudden crashes.

Secondly, I had recently replaced the internal hard drive. I entered the BIOS CMOS, found the PnP/PCI Configuration section and its "Reset Configuration Data" and set it to "Enabled". This should have allowed the plug-and-play BIOS to reconfigure the DMI data for the hardware change. Then I forced the system to redetect all the hardware devices by deleting the relevant registry key as follows:

Start ... Run ... Regedit

Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, delete the folder Enum and all its subfolders

Windows redetected all the hardware devices on rebooting (note: it needed rebooting multiple times before all the hardware was detected, requiring the installation discs for some devices). This appears to be functionally equivalent to reinstalling a clean version of Windows, but without losing all your installed software.

I hope that this helps anyone reading this post to avoid the hours of frustration that I experienced. I never did establish the definitive cause of this problem, however I have not had any recurrence since following the steps above.
