fdisk and formating and installing win 95
hello, yea it's me again, i have a falcon custon built computer. that i want to fdisk and format. and in one of my other post, i had a problem with it, after the format, there was a message about a possible virus. well i disabled the anti-virus and it's up after the format, but i have a friend that is interested in the computer and want's win. 95 installed on it. (so they can play some old game's on it), he has supplyed me with a win 95 disk, a new install, not a upgrade. for i believe after doing the fdisk and format, that you need the full version disk and not a upgrade. he also supplyed a win.95 start up disk too. i had already installed win 98 on the computer, can i uninstall win 98 to 95, or will i have to fdisk and format and install win 95. tks slinger

You can just format the partition and install Windows 95. You will need the full version of Windows 95 to install it. I believe the upgrade CD trick with Windows 98Se to get the full version installed only works with Windows 98se.

Best to reformt (FDISK if you want to, but not strictly necessary), since you are starting completely clean.
Not sure if you could install Win95 over Win98 anyway. I never tried that myself! HTH, David. |

Hey sling!
I think that it depends on the version of 95. If it is the 95 with USB support, I believe that you can format and intstall 95. This is because this version of 95 support win32, while the previous versions don't. If you have a previous version of 95, I think you'll have to FDISK first. Later |

tks roy as far as i can tell, it's 95b the disk says for distribution only with a new pc, microsoft window's 95 companion, i can install 98 on the computer just fine, after fdisk and format. but after that i do another fdisk and format to install win 95. and the start up disk that was provided, doesn't have c-d support like the 98 start up disk does. mabey the win 95 cd-rom isn't a full version like they thought. i have a win 95 upgrade disk, but after doing this fdisk and format, and blankind the c drive i fell that i need a full version 95, instead of a upgrade 95 tks slinger

How about:
Re-format using Sys to make it bootable, copy the Win95 CD to the HDD using any boot diskette with CD support (Win98 for example), then install from the HDD. Last edited by David_Jones; 01-02-2003 at 11:22 PM. |

Sling,
I did forget to mention that you need to install you cdrom drivers on your hard drive (or the windows boot floppy) to see the rom. I have all my 95 boot disks modified with the 98 boot disk cdrom drivers. Just make sure you use the 95B version of MSCDEX.exe. If you need, i'll email you a copy of my 95B boot disk. just drop me an email. |

tks roy, i'v went to bootdisk.com and downloaded there boot disk for win 95 and they don't boot up when doing a restart. says non-system disk or disk error. the win 95 start up dis works, but there are no cd-rom drivers in it. it i use a win 98 start up disk it installes a cd-rom driver, but the driver doesn't work on the cd-rom. the cd-rom is a creative modle gcd-r580r. now if you send me your start up disk, i'll give it a try tks slinger

Sorry - I am confused.
Are you saying that the Win95 boot disk from bootdisk.com won't boot your PC, but that some other boot disk will? If so, that sounds odd to me. I may have the wrong end of the stick though! David. |

I think the bootdisk.com diskette is corrupt.
I suggest downloading a new copy (use the Win98 boot disk image), and recreating the diskette. How are you creating the diskette? Is it with the self extracting image? David. |

When you say, "download it and save it to a 3.5 floppy", how are you saving it to the floppy?
Is the image you are downloading, the self extracting image: http://www.mirrors.org/archived_soft...s/boot98se.exe If so, are you running the EXE file, and creating the boot disk under the control of that application, or are you just copying the EXE file to the diskette? David. |

hello david jones, here's what i do, i go to bootdisk.com, i then click on dos-win 9x/ht4/200/xp excellent boot disk, i then click on win. 95 version b, and then a box pops up and say's, you are downloading the file boot95b.exe (858kb). i then click save file now. i then click ok, a box then comes up. (as to where i want to save it), i select floppy a, and put a blank 3.5 floppy in the drive and when it's done i put it in the puter that i want to install. i then boot it and it say's non-system disk, but an org. win 98 boot disk will work, so it's not a problem with the puter. hope this explaine's what's up, c-ya slinger

Don't save the download to the floppy. Save it to My Documents and then click on the file to start the floppy disk creation.

That's right.
Save the EXE file somewhere on your HDD, then find it in Windows Explorer, and double click on it to run. It will ask you to insert a blank floppy in the disk drive, and will then create the boot diskette for you. Once done, that diskette should be bootable. HTH, David. |

here's a update on my install of win. 95. i bought a new install cd-rom of win. 95 and with the help of bootdisk.com's 95 boot disk, i got this computer to finially install 95 off the cd. i think my buddy's copy of win. 95 was not a complete setup disk, becuse it was for a packard bell unit and it said window's 95 companion, on the disk. and the strange thing was that, when i used the boot disk from bootdisk.com, it put the cd-rom driver as drive R , i then changed to drive R then did the setup from there and it's up and running. thank you all for your help. c-ya sling

The PB disk could only be used on the specific setup (machine) that it was designed for.
