Hi...I have a Lite-on 16x/48x DVD player (LTD163D). Whenever I try to play a DVD in either PowerDVD or Windows Media Player, the computer freezes up completely. Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't work and the computer has to be restarted by powering off/on again. I've downloaded the latest display drivers, upgraded to Windows Media Player 9, downloaded DirectX 9 and upgraded to Service Pack 1. Nothing seems to have helped. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Do you think it's a problem with the DVD drive itself or with Windows XP (home edition)? Also, in the Hardware section of My Computer, Device 0 (the DVD drive) on the Secondary IDE Channel is running in PIO mode although "DMA if available" is selected. My Lite-on burner on the same channel is running in DMA Mode 2. Could this be the problem? The mainboard is an ECS K7VTA3 Rev. 2 which I've flashed to the latest bios and installed the latest VIA 4-in-1's. Any help is appreciated!!

Has this drive worked before? If not in XP then in another OS ?
I ask because I've heard this one before but you're not exactly following the script. Usually a DVD drive stuck in PIO mode gives very jerky playback but doesn't freeze. This is a shotgun approach but if XP is at fault it will enable DMA for the drive. Go into Device Manager and remove IDE2. Xp will recognize and reinstall it on boot up and you can enable DMA for both drives. If, after this, DVDs still won't play then we can begin looking elsewhere for the trouble. One more thing; I've learned to my cost that the last thing you want to do when something's not working is install more stuff " in order to fix it". Take it from me, you just make finding the answer harder. Andym has a good point. Don't install anything yet but check at Microsoft Help & Support if your DVD player is supported. Andym, I patched PowerDVD to get the latest version, but still no luck. Pam, the drive has always done this and I don't have another PC with a different OS to test it in. I followed your advice and got the drive running in DMA Mode 2 but it didn't work. Windows still freezes after the opening logo. I'm beginning to suspect the drive is kaput. I'm going to swap in my other Lite-on DVD drive to see if it works. Any other suggestions besides this one?

Go to My computer and note how the drive is listed.
If it's not working there will be a large red x through it. |

It's listed as working properly. The drive itself works fine, it plays audio CD's, recognizes and reads burned data cd's, and plays games just fine. It's just that it won't play a DVD (it's main reason for being in the computer). I'll swap them and see what happens. It's still eligible for an RMA from newegg so I'm covered if it comes to that. Thanks for your help!
