I had Win98SE then updated to Win2K.
I now want to perform a 'clean' reboot of Win2K but when I try to do it from within Win2K, it only replaces the Windows files and doesn't remove (format) the old files and folders ? If I try to start from the CD, I get a message saying that the PC is unable to boot from it ? I have the BIOS set to boot from the CDROM. Where am I going wrong ? TIA |

If I understand you correctly, to reinstall just use good old fdisk.
If this isn't what you meant please rephrase your question. |

I've tried that now and no joy :-(
Why does my Win2K CD refuse to be booted from ? I understood that no floppies were needed and I could set up the first boot device in the BIOS as the CDROM drive and that would set it spinning. All I get is a message saying it's not a bootable disc ? HELP ! |

Try booting from safe mode: Reboot press 'f8' key.
Edit: Make sure when you set the first boot device that you selected 'Save and exit'. Some setups I believe, have a selection like 'exit ' which doesn't save your changes. Last edited by Bajanine; 01-04-2003 at 01:10 PM. |

Hi,
If you still cannot get your suystem to boot from the CD, get four floppy disks and run Makeboot.exe in the bootdisk directory of your CD. It creates four setup disks that you can then use to install Win2K. Boot from those disks instead of the CD (set your system to boot from floppy in BIOS first).Works just as well as the CD boot, just takes a little longer. Once you have the setup running, select "Clean Install". That shouls do it. NPP BTW, save those disks; you may need them later. |

Thanks for the tip pillainp - I have just finished making a set and tried them.
After loading all four I choose to setup Win2K and choose the partition then choose whether to keep FAT32 or convert to NTFS file system. Whichever option I now choose here (NTFS/FAT32/format NTFS) the PC asks for the Win2K SP2 disc and I don't have one ! I tried to download SP2 (101mb !) and it didn't work. Any more ideas ? Thanks so far. |

Do you have an upgrade pack for Win2K or a full system disk for "Computers Without Windows"?

It's a disc 'for computers without Windows'.
I've now given up and installed Win98SE and used the Win2K disc to upgrade. I now need to know how to get rid of the start-up message giving me the option of booting Win2K or Win98SE - I obviously don't want to boot Win98SE that's why I upgraded ! TIA |

Just edit your boot.ini file.
To specify the default operating system for startup
Open System in Control Panel. On the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, click Settings. Under System startup, in the Default operating system list, click the operating system you want to start when you turn on or restart your computer. Deselect the Display list of operating systems for check box. or just rt. click 'MyComp' then select the 'Advanced tab' then 'Startup and recovery' and set the default OS then UNcheck the 'time to display' option. Hope this helps. |

Thanks Bajanine
I've changed the 30 second option in the 'time to display' to 0 seconds and the message has gone. Thanks again. |
