Windows Protection Error: A7V333 BIOS
I was glad when I fixed my first built PC, but I ran into a big problem.
The problem is a combination of: ------------------ Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum Asus A7V333 BIOS (system performance option) possibly Norton Anti-Virus Protection 2000 ------------------- My PC specs are CPU: AMD Athlon 1700XP Mobo: Asus A7V333 motherboard CD-Rom: Freecom CD-RW (I use this with Easy CD Creator 5) DVD-Rom: Toshiba DVD Rom Memory: 256mb DDR PC2100 HDD: 20GB Western Digital Graphics Card: GeForce 4 Ti 4200 Sound Card: Soundblaster PCI512 Operating Sys: Windows 98 (not Second Edition) Before I installed Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum, I fixed my previous problem that caused my PC games to freeze. I fixed the problem by changing the CPU Speed and System Performance. With the CPU Speed option, I changed it from 1100MHz to 1466MHz (my AMD CPU is a 1700XP). With System Performance option, I changed it from Optimal to Turbo. When I made the changes in the BIOS, my games no longer freezes. However, when I installed the CD-Writing software Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum for my Freecom CD-RW. After installing Easy CC 5, I had to restart my PC. This is where the problem starts; Windows 98 was about to load but I get a black screen with a single line saying "Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your PC". I do so but the Window Error Protection error keeps appearing. At one time, it said something like "NAVP Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your PC" I didn't realised until later, NAVP was Norton Anti-Virus Protection. So I don't know if it's a clash between 2 parts of software or the software with the BIOS. To bypass this WPE, I went into the BIOS and changed System Performance option to Optimal. The PC rebooted and Windows 98 was finally loaded. With the Optimal still selected, I no longer get the Window Protection Error. I scanned my HDD with Norton Anti-Virus with the latest updates (31/12/02). No virus was detected. I haven't uninstalled Easy CC 5 software yet. I wanted to hear your suggestions on how to fix the Windows Protection Error AND have the Turbo option selected. I'm going to use RegClean to check out the Registry for any errors. Can you please help me out? Cheers, John |

Do you have any other burning software installed? If so you need to pick one to use and uninstall the other as this can cause major problems. (having two installed). Also have you done all updates on your os?

No, I haven't done any updates for Win98 and I don't have any other burning software. Easy Creator 5 Plat is the only burning software I have.

Hi Jova,
I've run into that myself. Try uninstalling Roxio and do a complete scan disk, defrag, and virus check. Yes, do the RegClean, it works fine for me. Run Windows Update and update Win 98.2 to the max, as that does fix a lot of things. Once your system is up and running in good condition, I'd set the mobo to JumperLess Mode (I run Win 98.2 on the same mobo) as JM works very good. Make sure everything is OK. While you're doing this, order a newer copy of Norton AV, or Norton System Works from Newegg.com for about $14 OEM. Unload AV 2000. Run RegClean and stuff again, then install the new version. Scan for virus. Turn off any AV, then install Roxio. And, BTW, you can have two burner programs installed at one time, but just one "packet writing" program. I have both Nero and Roxio installed and use them both all the time, and have setup other systems like this as well. However, I only use Roxio's DirectCD for CD-RW writing. HTH TwoRails |
