Backup

Hello again

I have drive image 2002 (and have been using it for around 2 year) which is good for backup of a complete drive but now i have 80gb hard drive and it will take a lot of CDs to back up my files every month even though i will have backup up most of them already (from the month before).

Is there not anyway to do a sort of intelligent backup where a program detects which files have been update in the last month and only backs them up?

Something free would also be good as i have put out lot of money on my computer already.

Thanks

Depending on the version of Windows you have, you may already have a backup program that can do what you want. But even if you don't, you can use another.

I use Norton Ghost for monthly backups of my drive, and I use WinRAR to backup all data folders every day. Just backing up the data doesn't take much space at all.

In addition, partitioning your hard drive differently will help with backups. Backing up an entire 80 GB hard drive is a pain, especially because 95% of the stuff doesn't change much. Breaking up that space into different partitions for data, programs, games, MP3s, and whatever you want will definitely help. Why back up program files or games when you can easily reinstall them if something goes bad? The data is what can't be replaced, so sticking all your data in one place and just back that up is much more efficient.

Do you not need to buy a license for WinRAR after 30 days though? I agree with the backing up of games and programs being a waste because like you say, you still have the originals it's a waste of CD-Rs to back them up again.

I can't find the backup program on XP, don't think it actually has one...

WinXP includes this feature like any other windows - the only thing is - as it is with windows = sometimes it works and sometimes not - it's with everything the same this company gets out on the street it's decreasing quality you can stand beside and whatch it .!

You will need CDR -RW then you can use the utility which you will find in the BACKUP Menu ---Start >Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Backup - this is for Win2K - and I'm pretty sure it's the same in WinXP.
Hope this helps..

Here's how to install Backup in XP:

To install the backup program, put the XP Homeinstallation disc into your CD-ROM drive and open it in Windows Explorer. Go to \VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP. In the NTBACKUP folder, double-click ntbackup.msi to install the program. Once you install the backup program, it will appear in Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools.
