I have win98SE running on my c: partition. I have started to install win 2000Server on my D: partition. Win98 is not recognizing the boot.ini file that was created, so when I start up, there is no dual boot menu. As a result, I cannot complete the installation.
Is there something I can do?

Wouldn't that wipe out my O/S on the C: partition?

Okay, I guess the question I should ask is what does the boot.ini file do? Is that the file used for multibooting?

Didn't help. There are no lines written in the config.sys and there are no lines pertaining to the boot file in the autoexec.bat. Now what?

Here's a quote from a multiboot faq over at Anandtech:
(for a situation similiar to yours) _____ "Boot up from the Win2K CDROM and perform a repair installation (by hitting R when prompted). Either use the Recovery Console, and type in the command fixboot, or allow Win2K to perform an automatic or manual repair. If you perform a manual repair, make sure you select Inspect Boot Files. ALSO ... With BootPart from www.winimage.com, you can safely and easily add any bootable partition as an option to the NT loader. _____ Hope that helps . . . Gary [p.s. . . . the boot.ini file that is needed would be part of Win2k, not Win98. Win2k has a bootloader "Ntldr" (or something like that . . . I'm a little rusty) that probably checks Win2k's boot.ini file to see what OS's to display on it's boot menu ] [. . . and one more late note: our own David Risley has a nice article here at PC Mech over in the Operating System section about multibooting. He touches on the NT/2k/Xp bootloader, System Commander, XOSL and lots of useful information] Last edited by GaryRouth; 01-06-2003 at 01:59 AM. |

Thanks. I'll try the repair thing. One question about it though, does it work when the installation has not yet been completed?
