Norton AntiVirus 2002 not installing correctly
Ok, heres what happened. I had Norton Antivirus before I upgraded to XP. I reformatted my computer and deleted all sorts of crap. it was deleted and i couldnt find my norton 2002 so i just was like "ok..., ill buy a new one" but never got around to it. I finally found it, and its not installing right. In the beginning, it looked fine then it said "Could not install LiveUpdate due to errors." and then the installation goes on, then it says "Installation Ended Prematurely. Nortan couldn't be installed." I exited everything the only program running was the cd.
is there anything im forgetting? btw, I got Nortan AntiVirus 2002 and Norton Systemworks |

O--I have heard that maybe some programs have to be completed uninstalled instead of just turnning them off to install the program that you want now. Then come back an re-install the programs you took out. NOTE: this is just something put out on the table for you to consider. a thought.d

I have heard that norton antivirus 2002 has some problems with XP, but these were resolved in NAV 2003

Right on Skeg....
you need to get a copy of norton antivirus 2003.... if you upgrade to win-xp norton antivirus works ok, but if you do a complete re-install then the install problems start.... thats what happen in my case anyway.... |

Just found a link for you to look at. Have you installed sp1 yet? That may be the problem since there is a compatibility update that is included in sp1. Here is the link from the mskb.

Here's a link to your problem.... JUST COPY AND PASTE THE LINK IN YOUR BROWSER....
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...av2002_pro_tas Norton AntiVirus 2000/2001/2002/2003 no longer functions after upgrading to Windows 2000 or Windows XP Situation: You upgraded your computer to Windows 2000 or XP from Windows 95, 98, or Me. Norton AntiVirus 2000/2001/2002/2003 was already installed on the computer that you upgraded. After the upgrade, Norton AntiVirus (NAV) either fails to start, or you see error messages that refer to NAV. You may also not be able to uninstall NAV. Solution: Each version of NAV has its own installation that is specific to the operating system (OS). There is one installation for Windows NT/2000 and one for Windows 95/98/Me. After upgrading a system to Windows 2000 or Windows XP, the installation of NAV that was installed on Windows 95/98/Me will no longer function correctly. To fix this, do the following: 1. If NAV was installed as a standalone program, then you must run the Rnav2003.exe removal utility to remove NAV. 2. If NAV was installed as part of Norton SystemWorks (NSW), run the SymClean removal utility first, and then run the Rnav2003.exe removal utility. 3. After running the removal tools, manually delete the virus definitions folders and registry entries. 4. Reinstall the program on the new operating system. The details of these steps follow: To uninstall NAV by using the Rnav2003.exe or SymClean removal utility: 1. If NAV was installed as a standalone program, then follow the steps in the document How to uninstall Norton AntiVirus by using the Rnav2003.exe removal utility to remove NAV. 2. If NAV was installed as part of NSW, then follow the instructions in the document How to use the Norton SystemWorks cleanup utility (SymClean) to remove NSW. After NSW has been removed, run the Rnav2003.exe removal utility to make sure that all of NAV has been removed. 3. Restart the computer. To delete the NAV and virus definitions folders and the virus definitions registry entries: 1. Open Windows Explorer. 2. Delete the following folders: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs folder C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus NOTE: If NAV is installed to a different folder, then delete that folder instead. If NAV is installed as part of NSW, then delete the C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks folder. 3. Exit Windows Explorer. 4. Edit the registry to remove the SharedDefs key according to the following instructions: CAUTION: We strongly recommend that you back up the system registry before making any changes. Incorrect changes to the registry could result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify only the keys that are specified. See the document How to back up the Windows registry before you proceed. 5. Click Start, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears. 6. Type regedit and then click OK. The Registry Editor opens. 7. Delete the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec\SharedDefs 8. Exit the Registry Editor, and then restart the computer. To reinstall NAV: 1. If NAV was installed from the NAV installation CD, then follow the instructions in the document that applies to your version of NAV: If only NAV was installed, then follow the instructions in the document that applies to your version of NAV: NAV 2003: How to install Norton AntiVirus 2003 or Norton AntiVirus 2003 Professional Edition from the CD NAV 2002: How to install Norton AntiVirus 2002 from the CD NAV 2000/2001: How to install Norton AntiVirus 2000/2001 from the CD If NAV was installed as a part of NSW, then see the document that applies to your version of NSW NSW 2002/2003: How to install Norton SystemWorks 2002 and 2003. NSW 2001 How to install Norton SystemWorks 2. Follow the prompts during the installation. 3. Restart the computer when prompted. 4. If NAV was installed from a downloaded file, then follow the instructions in the document that applies to your version of NAV: NAV 2003: How to install a copy of Norton AntiVirus or Norton AntiVirus Professional Edition 2003 that was downloaded from the Symantec Store Web site NAV 2001/2002: How to install a copy of Norton AntiVirus that was downloaded from Digital River 5. Restart the computer at the end of the installation, and then run LiveUpdate to download any available program updates and the latest virus definitions. 6. Restart the computer when prompted. If running the Rnav2003.exe removal utility and then reinstalling NAV does not fix the problem, then the Windows registry may be corrupted. In most cases, the only way to fix this is to back up your data, reformat the hard disk, and then reinstall the OS. Contact your computer manufacturer or Microsoft for help with this process. NOTES: The only versions of NAV that are compatible with Windows XP are NAV 2002 and 2003. If you upgraded your OS to Windows XP, then you must uninstall the previous version of NAV by following the instructions in this document and then upgrade to NAV 2002 or 2003. If you installed the Windows 98/Me downloaded version of NAV 2003 before upgrading to Windows XP, then you must uninstall that version of NAV 2003 manually, and then obtain the Windows 2000/XP version of the program by contacting Digital River either by phone or email. You can contact Digital River at the following phone numbers: U.S. 1-877-255-7907 International 1-952-646-5351 Or by email at: symanteccs@digitalriver.com If Windows 98/Me and Norton AntiVirus came preinstalled on your computer, and if you decide to upgrade your operating system to Windows 2000 or XP, then you may not have the version of Norton AntiVirus that was designed to run on the new version of Windows. See the suggestions that apply to the version of Windows that you have upgraded to: Windows 2000: 1. If your computer vendor provided a NAV installation CD with your computer, then you can use that CD to install the Windows 2000 version of NAV. 2. Upgrade to NAV 2002 or 2003. NAV 2002 or 2003 are compatible with all Windows operating systems. Windows XP: Upgrade to 2002 or 2003. NAV 2002 and 2003 are the only versions of NAV that are compatible with Windows XP. Click this link for upgrade information for NAV 2003. |

I never use System Works so I couldn't speak to it. The ones I have had problems with either 2002 or 2003. I just used the removal tool that was mentioned, it's a small download from Symantec. The I install the latest version of Live Update from Symantec's site. After that I install NAV from the disk. So far that has worked on the computers that gave me problems. Maybe ten or twelve of them.
