Question from 95 to 98.

I want to change from 95 t0 98. I have a cd and floppy boot disk. It tells me that it cannot change because it detects another os and it isn't an upgrade disk. Is there some way to make it think that there is no other os. or how can i get rid of 95. Because I can begin to setup the 98 at startup. thanks in advance for any help.

If you want to just upgrade your Win95 to 98, boot from either the CD or the bootdisk to a Command prompt with CD support. Run the following commands

C:
cd windows
rename win.com win.xxx
d: (if your CD-Rom isn't D, sub in the appropriate letter)
setup

Duing the setup, you will be prompted for an installation directory which will be defaulted to C:\WINDOWS.000, select alternate directory and rename it back to C:\WINDOWS, continue the installation to the end and you will be upgraded to Win98.

If you want to wipe out 95 (and everything on your drive), boot from either the CD or bootdisk once again to a command prompt with CD-Rom support. Run the following commands

D: (sub in appropriate drive letter if your CD-Rom is not D)
cd win98
format C:/q (answer yes to the format and enter either a blank vol label or one of your choice)
setup

follow installation instructions to the end.

Cool

Do you have any data you want to keep. If not, go into BIOS and set first boot device as CD. Boot up with WIN98 CD in drive and follow on screen instructions. This will be a clean install and wipe out anything currently on the drive.

Post back if this is not what you want to do. If you want to do something different let us know. Also system specs, would be nice. What kind of system, mobo, amount of RAM, size of HD, ect.

Boot the computer.
Go into Explorer, find "win.com" in the c:\windows folder
Rename it to "win.bak"
Insert the Win98 CD.
Go to Start > Run > browse to the Win98CD, double click "Setup.exe".
It's that simple.
