No Drives but we keep on crashing

I just erased 95 and put 98 on but know when i get on before I leave dos mode it says that there are errors with vnetsup.vxd,
vnetbios.vxd ,vredir.vxd and a few others. It tells me to press any key on each of them. Once I finally get to my desk top I open My Computer only the files come up. A,C and D are missing. I can't do anything and then that pesky Illegal Operation message comes up. I have to close it. I can't really do much. I lucky to get into the start menu without it crashing.( by crashing I mean me having to manualy turn it off.) I appreciate any help offered.

I noticed you other thread. Just have a little patience and someone who can help will be here.

Now, I've got some questions for you. You said you "erased" win95. How did you do this? Reformatting or deleting?
How did you install 98? fresh install or upgrade from 95?

I would suggest reformatting, then installing 98. When the setup gets to searching for hardware and drivers need to be located, try going to the "X:\win98" directory ("X" being whatever letter your CD drive is, I'm assuming it's "D").

Another thing, if you have the driver disks for your hardware, you may need to use those as well when your computer does a search for hardware. That is, if the drivers are not found in the "X:\win98" directory.

You might want to try it again. It may be the easiest route to take. With those errors you got, it sounds like some crucial O/S or hardware drivers were not installed/not installed properly.

When a dialog box comes up that asks you for a location of a driver (or drivers) find every one. This may take a little while, but at least your system will be up and running. If the drivers are not found on the win98 CD, look on any driver CDs/diskettes that came with your computer. Good luck!

Hi Monty davis,

Stripe your system down to just the motherboard, CPU, heatsink, video card, 1 stick of RAM, floppy drive, CD-ROM drive (or other optical drive), 1 hard drive and power supply. Let the soundcard, modem, NIC and any other expansion card out till later.

Check that the hard drive is recognized properly in BIOS.

You may want to replace the IDE cable.

Now format your hard drive and try to install Win98 again. Let us know if you're still having the same problem.

The problem you're having is that you did an upgrade from 95 to 98 with too many files missing.
No need to get into the hardware mess, this is a simple boot/operating system install.
You now have 3 threads about this, and it's totally confusing, as nobody knows just where you are with this machine.
If you want to wipe it clean, and start fresh, there are certain steps to take, that must be done in the correct order, and the amount of advice you've already been given is confusing at best.
Please post with exactly what you've tried, what state the machine is in now, and what steps you took to get this far.
Once we're all on the same page, we'll help you get this up and running right.
