strange things happening to drive mappings

I just installed a new win2k server at work and mapped to it just fine. I came back a while later and had a little red x on the 'wire' part of the icon. But I double clicked to open it and I appeared to still be mapped to it as I could still see everything. When I closed the x went away? What's the deal? (I have a building full of people who will not think to try it as they will assume it's broken after years on Novel Netware 3.12) I'd like to get this resolved if any one can help
