Upgrading to Windows XP
It's me again. My daughter is trying to upgrade her computer that has two operating systems on it. Windows ME and Windows 2000.
She started the upgrade and it got to a point where it told her that she can not upgrade a computer that has two operating systems on it. She can't afford to loose any information on the computer she has. Any ideas on what she can do to get around this problem or is it hopeless. Thank you |

What version of XP is it and which OS is she trying to upgrade?
If it is the Home version it will only upgrade the ME OS, but if it is PRO then she should be able to upgrade either OS.

Thanks for the reply James - It is the home version of XP. It looks like I need to invest some dollars and purchase the Pro edition.
With the Pro edition she will be able to upgrade to XP. Will that eliminate both OS's that are currently running on her computer? Hopefully so! |

why not just save all the files she wants to keep on to CDRW(s) and format the drive, then install XP
This is the way I would do it anyay, I have only done the Upgrade to XP once, and the mess it left meant I had to format and clean install anyway. If you did it this way and you only have the Upgrade and not the full version, you would have to have the windows Me CD. During the installation it asks for a valid windows CD to prove that you are upgrading and not trying to install the upgrade as a full OS, even though just popping the previous windows disc in will mean that the installation continues and you get a full XP install at the end. I always thought it to be a bit wierd, but it works, and means you dont have to waste time re-installing the old OS again, just have the CD handy

I second that opinion.

If you have two operating systems now, you will still have two operating systems with upgrade. The upgrade will NOT upgrade both and combine as one. XP home will upgrade the ME or XP PRO will upgrade either the ME or 2000, but not both.
If she wants to go with XP, then I would do as has already been suggested and that is back up and do a clean install. Personally I don't thinl it is that much of an improvement from 2000 to XP. Chas
