XP System Startup list of programs. Which to keep which to disable?
To watch movie trailers in Quicktime I needed to download their plugin. With that plug in their software constantly starts at startup and runs in lower right corner. There is no option given to disable it from starting automatically, so I go to msconfig option and look at the list of programs at startup.
Most of them are needed system files. I knwo that by looking where they start from, so I don't mess with those. Some however are questionable. There is this thing qttask.exe which is the Quicktime program I don't want. Also there is winampa.exe which has to do with winamp. My question is this: Some programs there in the list have quotation marks in beginning and the end. In fact, Quicktime and Winamp are the only two that have them. What do they signify? Here I post the full line: "C:\Program Files\Winamp\Winampa.exe" "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime what is -atboottime ? Also do you have any suggestions as to what I should definately disable?

I looked at Viper's site, but it doesn't answer my specific questions.

The reason for the "" marks is that there are spaces in the path to the file (i.e Program SPACE Files). The -atboottime is what's called a switch and simply specifies an option. In this case the option is probably to start in the system tray. Switches always appear after a space hence the necessity for the ""
I would think you are ok to turn both of these off. Click Start | Run and type"msconfig" without the quotes and click Ok. In the Startup Tab remove the tick from the box for these 2 programmes. If it doesn't work out simply turn them back on. |

Go into the registry, make a backup, search for "-atboottime" and edit the key to take out that switch.
Restart. |
