I think that you would have better luck downloading one from bootdisk.com

WinNt, W2K and Linux have that feature, but I don't think Win95/98 or WinMe do.

In your computer Bios, is the floppy drive set as the first one to get tried?

Ok, first off if the win98 boot disk won't load the cdrom drivers, then you have an unique cdrom device.

Also, when we say to download the bootdisk, you download it to a folder and then start the install setup which will unzip all of the files to the floppy disk. You don't just copy the downloaded file to the floppy.

In your case, it may be easier to hook up another cdrom unit (at least tempory) or put the hard drive into another computer just to get things loaded up.

If you have to use that cdrom device, you will need to know the driver that it uses and reference it in the boot disk config.sys and autoexec.bat file. I haven't done that for quite some time and am abit rusty on proceedure at this point.

tks homey 1st) i can install win 98 with a win 98 boot disk and the win 98 cd-rom. 2nd) i can't install win 95 with a win 95 boot disk, no cd-rom driver's 3rd) i can't install win 95 with a win 98 boot disk. it says , no win 98 start up files abort installion. now you say that the boot disk from bootdisk.com is a zip file? why when i download it, it doesn't say that it's a zip file, it says it's a exe' file, well that would explain why i say's it's a non-system disk. i guess i'm not reading all the install info. from bootdisk.com i'll give it a try and unzip it to a floppy. tks slinger

It is more likely to be D:\ (unless you have multiple HDD partitions) but could be anything I suppose.

Worst case, just try each letter.

Post back to say if the CD-ROM is working.

David.

Hi slingslingbinks,

From the Bootdisk.com website: "To make a better Windows 98 bootdisk than the one that came with your Windows CD, put in your Win98 CD, open Windows Explorer and seek out \tools\mtsutil\fat32ebd\fat32ebd.exe and double click on the file."

I've used this method to make Win98SE bootdisks for the past few years and these work great...they have the generic CD-ROM driver on them as well as fdisk.exe and format.com...and they don't make a RAM drive to work from.
