Question powers down and then shuts down?

I recently upgraded from Windows ME to Windows XP Home edition. One problem I am having is the computer will shut itself down after entering Sleep/Hiberate mode. I just want the machine to spin down, but not completely turn off.

Here are my current settings and specs:

Turn off monitor= 15mins
Turn off hard disks= 30mins
System Standby= 20mins\
System Hibernates= 1 hour

Hibernate is enabled

Is there something I should look for in my Bios? Any and all help is appreciated...

Gateway PIII 800, 256 MB ram
Windows XP Home Edition

No antivirus software installed yet...

just remeberd hibernation turns off the computer and stores any thing in ram to a file on the hdd then when you turn computer back on it reloades the stuff in to ram you nead to disable hibernation to keep the pc in stand by moad

Standby and hibernate are two different things. Hibernate is really for notebooks as it allows them to boot back up quickly but doesn't drain the battery.

Smile Bios...

Only option in BIOS referes to either enable or disable power management.

As for Hibernate, I had this option selected before, and the machine would spin down and not shut off complately, but I will try by disabling hibernation and see what happens.

I guess turning the machine on and off is no biggy, but Iam from the school that belives if your are going to use your computer everyday whether it's for a few minutes or a few hours the machine should be left on and save the "innards" from the power surge and spikes that run thru the machine every time you turn the computer on and off.

Lightbulb problem solved...

In my case the problem was not really a problem but my failure to read the fact that within windows XP ENABLING Hibernation will lead the computer to then SHUT DOWN.

I guess Hibernation is really benificial to laptop users and not an issue when your machine is plugged in.

Again, DISABLE Hibernation and use only STANDY BY mode will prevent the computer from shutting down completly, but still allow your computer to turn its monitor off and spin down the hard drives.

Thanks to all for their input!
