win98 install from lpt cd drive
i was just wondering,
a friend of mine has an ibm notepad with no cd drive and a windows that is in serieously bad shape. another buddy of mine has an external cd drive for lpt port, could i use this (in combination with a boot disk in A: to format this pc and reinstall windows?????? |

Notepads are so proprietary that you might be better off just installing the borrowed parallel port cd drive into his current setup, and trying an "over-the-top" install - might save a lot of time hunting down drivers for all that proprietary hardware.
I haven't tried this myself on a laptop, so you might want to wait for another post from a tech who sees more laptops than I do. Best of luck . . . Gary |

it's an IBM so i do not thhink drivers would be a problem but it's worth concidering annyway |

You should be able to do the install. Assuming that the laptop is still functional you should be able to install the CDROM to make sure it will work. I would imagine the generic CDROM driver with the boot disk would work. Before you try to format/reinstall, connect the cdrom to the lpt port and startup with the boot disk. Choose to boot with CDROM support and then check to see that the drive is recognized when a cd is in it. If the cd rom is recognized then it should be safe to proceed with your format/reinstall.
