This is the problem.

I'm having problems with my network. I'm pretty sure it's windows xp's fault. My computer refuses to connect to the netwwork/internet since my last reformat. I have tried 2 different network controllers. The card and the router see each other and have the leds on, but windows doesn't love me. I have told it to use an always on connection and connect to the network through the router.
If you don't have a clue, just hit windows xp with a large, hard, object.

He disabled the xp firewall with no effect.

Are you using DHCP or do you set static IPs? Do you get an IP address?

If you want to enable DHCP do this:

Control Panel (Switch to Classic View)
Double Click Networking Connection
Right Click your LAN (This is usually your Ethernet Card)
Then PROPERTIES and Look for INTERNET PROTOCOL (TCP/IP)
Then Highlight it by Clicking once and Click PROPERTIES again
Then TICK MARK –“Obtain IP Address Automatically”
Then Click Advance Tab and see if DHCP ENABLED shows up then
Click OK. You are done. HTH.

What router are you using? Are your router settings accessible through a web browser interface? Go back through your router setup, either manually or with a wizard. 0.0.0.0 IP is being indicated as the current IP where?

I'm using a Linksys ethernet router.
My DSL is SBC PPPoE. I tried to install the wizard on xp, and it told me to reset the router, and now the router wont work on my ME machine that im writing this with. I'm bypassing the router and using just the dsl modem, but this isn't the ideal setup since I can only use 1 pc.

Edit: Now the router is working with my ME machine. Going back to my xp machine to tinker.
my XP computer says it cannont contact the router. Tried different slots. The network controller and the router have the proper lights on to signal connection. Arg

There is a network setup disk that you need to make and run on the ME box, if I remember right.
