Gateway OS installation help
Say Guys, I'm trying to install Win98 on a Gateway 433c for a lady I work with using the System Restoration CD. The installation works UNTIL I get to the part that says "Must remove CD, press F1 then the computer will reboot". I remove the CD, press F1 and the computer reboots. Then it says "put the CD back into the CD Drive and press F1 and the installation will continue". I do that but it now says that there is no CD in the drive and it will go no further?? This is the third Gateway that has done the exact same thing. I had to give the first two back as I couldn't figure it out. Is there a secret that I'm missing here? Gateway's website is no help. Any help will be appreciated, Thank you, Collieman

Have you tried leaving the CD in and doing a reboot?

not important, I finally found the answer!!! I needed the Win98 CD to put in the drive after the reboot NOT the restoration disk. I called the lady I was helping and asked her for the disk but she said she never got a Win98 CD when she bought the puter so I used my full version. Works great except it doesn't have all the programs that comes with the Gateway CD. The restoration CD will work by itself if you are only going to "touchup" Windows. If you are going to do a full reformat then you have to have the restoration CD PLUS the Win98 CD. The restoration CD doesn't have the OS on it I'm assuming. I always thought they did. Collieman
p.s. I tried leaving the CD in and rebooting but the process starts all over again. |

Glad you found the problem. I have a friend with a 3 yr. old gateway. It came with 2 restore disks and a 98 disk. You install the first disk, which contains the needed drivers, then the 98 disk and finally the second restore disk.

Collieman,
About the Gateway restoration CDs: I worked in Gateway's Technical support for a year and can help here. The old Gateway's had one restoration cd that included DOS and Windows 3.1, the hardware drivers, and programs. Later, this was updated to Windows 95. Next, they had two cds, on that fdisked and reformatted the drive and had the device drivers and software; and a Windows 95 cd. Later this changed to Windows 98. Later, the Windows 98 cd was renamed System Restore CD Disk 2 (ver 98SE) or (ver Me). The Me version also had System Restoration Disk 3, which had sotware programs. Later, The names of the disks changed to Drivers (red), System (blue), and Programs (yellow). This eliminated much confusion with techs, and especially the customers. Your friend probally has System Restoration Disk 2 (ver 98SE). Her drivers and programs are on Disk 1. Insert the disk with Windows running. You should get a SRCD menu listing the drivers and programs not yet installed. You might check out this link from Gateway's technical support site http://support.gateway.com/support/m...4655/index.htm or this link for inforamtion on the drivers cd http://support.gateway.com/support/s...e=dt_sycd.html Hope this helps
