Swap file size?
Howdy everyone,
I'm running XP Pro w/ 1GB DDR SDRAM. XP sets up my swap file at 1536-3072. Why? This seems like overkill. A 1.5-3GB swap file for a system w/ 1GB RAM? I doubt XP will ever use the swap file anyway. I'm not in the habit of multi-tasking with many programs open at the same time. If I were to change it, what would you recommend? TIA |

Overkill. I have a gig of RAM as well, and set swap to 2mb larger than it's max usage.
Monitor it for awhile, and see what size it gets to, even under the heaviest use. Mine is 768 meg, max and min. |

reboot,
Where can I monitor it? Since I seldom run more than one program at a time, do you think my swap file will ever be used? Doesn't WinXP use the swap file when the RAM is full? TIA |

With your 1gb of SDRAM, that 1gig of addition swap file is overkill. Set a minimum and maximum of 160mb and you should do fine. I only have 512 RAM and 160mb is my swap size as well.

This will depend on the apps you run, more than anything else. Leaving it alone is a good idea. If you really want to set it, figure out how much you need and add some surplus. There are games that demand more than 160 megs of swap, regardless of the amount of ram you have. There are print/photo/video apps that want a gig or more. Have fun.

To monitor it, right click on the clock, select task manager, and hit the Performance tab. Pagefile use and history are there.
Mine never gets used, except when doing heavy graphics work. I can load up an AV, 3 or 4 browsers, email client, FTP server and even more, and it doesn't get used, but open up PSP and grab a big graphic and it starts, but only while I'm working with the graphic. As soon as I close PSP, it doesn't get used any more. I set it as high as it is, just to give a little leeway for the largest .bmp files I work with. (1152x864). I haven't found a game yet, that uses anywhere near all of it. |
