Question Ie 6

I'm running Internet Explorer 6 on Win98se. For the most part it runs great . The only problem is when I try to download something of the internet. When i try to download, I get a blank window and no download. I have to switch to netscape to download anything. It doesn't seem to matter what type of file(program,multimedia...etc.)
It's not a big problem just annoying. Thank you for your input.

Hi plumerjr,

Did you update to SP 1?? It fixes a lot of little bugs.

Also, after SP 1 (if you haven't already done it), you can try the Repair option under Add/Remove programs.

Good Luck

At the top of the browser is Tools". Select it then Internet Options. In the pane for Temporary Internet Files, delete cookies and delete files. If that doesn't fix, find Index.dat and delete it. If the Index.dat file is corrupt, it can make the system think the folder is corrupt and block access, thereby closing off downloads. Index.dat should be recreated automatically afterwards.

[p.s. - the Index.dat that Sarge is referring to is the one in the Temporary Internet Files folder] . . .

Are you on a dial-up or broadband?

I tried to delete the index.dat file and I get an error message telling me that I cannot delete this file. What is the best way to do this?

I imagine you could boot to DOS and delete it from there. I tried it in Windows, too - just to see what would happen = got the same response you did ["No Can Do" in Windowtalk] -probably because it's protected, or in use. I haven't tried this particular fix before, so I'm as curious as you are to see what will bring a successful outcome.

Most of the time in work settings when folks can't download, it's due to proxy servers, or permissions, or security settings, lack of proper encryptions enabled - stuff like that. But it sounds to me like this is happening on your home machine. I haven't heard of this before, so I'm hoping to learn something.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

[p.s. . . . if you've ever had RealPlayer on your system, that used to install RealDownload - it's own download manager: any chance that something like that might be involved?]

Well there is another way to do this go and download the free program ERASER And then once you install it reboot. do a find file search for index.dat or whatever one you want to remove, when you find it right click it and select erase. It'll be gone. Just try not to get to happy with the program it does work.

I had a problem getting rid of a copy of KERNEL32.DLL that a virus had made and placed in C:\windows. I could not get the thing to del from the dos prompt, kept saying it couldn't find the file.

I right clicked on the offending file and then clicked or Properites.
I changed it from Archieve to Read Only and unchecked Hidden. I then tried to delete again using the Safe Mode dos prompt and it delted right away.
