When things go wrong like you listed, then it is probably a virus that has already done it's work. You need to run an AV program like F-PROT which is available for free to get rid of it. The probability that you will be able to get the system running right is slim.
You will probably end up FDISk and Formatting the drive again.

If you are lucky enough to have a working Internet connection, you can visit TrendMicro.com and try their online antivirus scanner called HouseCall. But of course your computer has to be functional enough to last through the download (only a minute or so with broadband, but a slow half-hour if you are limited to 28.8k or 33.6k).

If you have a recent version of Norton (such as the 2003 version) you can set your computer to boot from your CDrom drive [press the key mentioned in the banner at startup "Press F1 (or DEL, F10, etc) to Enter Setup"], insert the Norton CD into your optical drive, and it will run an Emergency Scan in DOS (slow- but has a chance of finding and isolating the virus)

[Another thing you can try - if no viruses are found] If you are running WinME, and can boot OK in Safe Mode: see if the behavior stops while in that mode. You can try a System Restore to a restore point prior to your WinZip adventures.

If no viruses are found, and you are running Win98, you can also try restoring the Registry by rebooting to DOS mode, then typing the command scanreg/restore and picking a saved Registry from before your current problem.

If you were adventuring in the Registry, it might just need to be set back before the changes. If a virus did the hacking . . . well, you know from Morris what the chances are. I might give you a 50/50 shot. . . .

By the way, if a virus is found - you'll want to scan whatever backups you have of your personal data - they might be infected too. That way when you restore them, you won't reinfect.

Sorry for your misfortune, but best of luck: you never know till you try.

I'm thinking Morris should run a mutual stock fund or something. . . . Sometimes I think he can see the future

Glad you're in business again
