Illgal Operation

Hi everybody,
I'm running Win98 SE on a gateway bout a year old. Everything is fine until I try to click my computer, then I get a windows error message with "Explorer" at the top,"This program has performed an illegal oeration and will be shut down", so when I click ok i get a message that says "An error has occurred in Internet explorer. Internet exporer will now close." I'm using IE6 sp 1, have been for a month, no problems until now. The thing that gets me is I'm not trying to use Internet explorer when I get this message. It's just very annoying. Any ideas or similar situations?

thanks,
jw

Go to your Add/remove programs and click on IE6 to remove ,it will give you an option to repair. Try that first

Also check in the Device Manager to see if there are any yellow marks there. This uses to happen with IRQ conflicts in machines with onboard devices.

Also, make sure no background programs are trying to open the internet connection and/or to run IE. Do you have a firewall?

Do the 3 finger salute once (Ctrl+Alt+Del, only once, or else the PC will rebbot) and check what programs you have running at the time.

I tried those two suggestions with no luck. My device manager looks great. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks,
