win XP memory problem

Well I did have this thread runner here

http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...4&goto=newpost

The memory I got is 256 mb pc2100 266 mHz ddr ram and tried to install another 256 but had alot of random errors with graphics type games and while on the internet plus sometimes it would just turn off and restart for no reason at all I've tried so many different things to fix it but it didn't help so being on the XP section of PCMECH I thought I'd post one more time before returning the 256 mb stick

The one thing I didn't try was reinstalling XP with the 512 and seeing if that fixes it BUT I really don't want to do that unless I'm sure it will work !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What does every one here think?

Will reinstalling work?

thanks for any reply

Hi toomyg,

I wouldn't bother trying to reinstall WinXP with the new RAM installed...it'll probably just error out.

It really does sound as if the new stick of RAM is defective or not the right one to work in that Compaq. Like glc said, you have to use RAM that is certified to work in a Compaq.
