I have an iWill KK266plus mobo driving an AMD AthlonXP 1800 cpu, 512mbRam, W98se with 2 hds (both Maxtor-30G & 80G).
I keep experiencing "system freeze" or "hang", whatever you want to call it. I have to do a hard restart to begin again. Does anyone on this forum have any clue as to what's causing it? I had read, somewhere on the web recently, that PCI card placement was a "critical factor." I'm running an ATI Radon 7500 AGP video card, PCI#1=Netword card for DSL,PCI#s 2-5=empty, and PCI#6=56K modem. Nothing in ISA slot. This is driving me crazy!!!! Any insight would GREATLY be appreciated. John |

hello and welcome
did you recently change anything on your computer that might have caused this.freezing can be caused by many things.are your problems recent, you could try a system restore back to a date when this wasnt happening.can you check your cpu tempatures, heat can cause your system to freeze.how many programs have you got running in the background,(press contr/alt/del to check this)another problem could be your power supply, do you know the size and make of your power supply.post back with a little more info hth |

Hi ezrydn,
The AGP slot and PCI slot 1 share resources, so if you're using a AGP video card you shouldn't have anything in PCI slot 1 (normally, you would use a PCI video card in PCI slot 1 if you didn't have a AGP video card). I'd stick the NIC in slot 2 or 3 (these two slots usually don't share resources with other devices like the other slots do) and then go into BIOS and assign an IRQ to which ever slot the NIC is in. WinXP is better at handling IRQ and resource assigning and sharing than Win98 or WinME. Another cause for freezing is over heating. Does your case have any case fans installed? What CPU heatsink/fan unit are you using? Is it installed properly? Clean out the Windows Temp folders (c:\Windows\Temp and c:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files) on a regular basis. Cricket
