CRASH MSN Messenger problems

I just reformatted my pc, and after reinstalling Windows XP SP1 I've been having problems connecting with MSN Messenger. Normally the program automatically logs you in when open it, however it stalls at the log-in screen. When I press connect it does nothing, and when I try to log in as a different user it tells me that it couldn't connect and that my .NET account may not exist which is incorrect.

Now, I've uninstalled it from windows, and downloaded and installed the latest version from Microsoft, but still no go.

Also, when I try to uninstall or reinstall the original version from my WinXP-SP1 CD I get this error:
Error in: C:\Program Files\Messenger\msgsc.dll
Missing entry:HideIcons

and then the installation stops but claims that is has finished installing.

Any ideas?

let me know,
jalbes

discovered new intelligence. I went to www.passport.com which is what messanger uses and when I try to connect and check the "sign in automatically" box I this error:

but my cookies are enabled. Does anyone have a solution?
