Boom Graphics Error or HD Error?

I'm trying to put together a PC. I installed a 64Mb DDR Asylum GE Force4 MX 440SE Video Card made by BFG Tech. Everything works fine except when I try to open a picture. A .jpg file, for instance. When I try to do this, the PC freezes for about 10 secs., brings me to a blue screen instructing me to scandisk my HD. Then it reboots all by itself. This also happens when I try to change the wallpaper from within the Display Properties window.
I haven't tried to open any other format such as .bmp.
This issue is not addressed by nVidia or BFG on their sites.
The graphics card has its own IRQ and it seems to be installed properly.
I have the latest XP drivers from nVidia.

When I tried to defrag the HD from within Windows, it did the same thing after 1%.

OS: Win XP Pro.
CPU: Pentium4 1.7
Motherboard: ASUS P4PE (Intel 845PE)
HD: Maxtor 80GB 7200rpm.
Mem: 256 DDR2100.

Any idea why this is happening?

Hi charlie10500,

Try running Check Disk (XP equivalent of Scandisk) in Safe Mode and see what it finds.

If that fails, then type Chkdsk at the Recovery Console.

Go into Programs Folders>DirectX>Setup and click on dxdiag and run the basic DX tests to see if they pass.

Try changing your Display Adapter to Standard VGA and see how that affects your ability to open jpegs. If you can do it with the standard VGA driver, then that would point to a video driver problem.

HTH
