Smile Mouse problems

Problem= My second computer has a problem I can't solve.
(There aren't many I can solve.)
On a cold start everything comes up ok except my mouse
(trackball) which comes up inactive, ie, cursor is frozen on screen.
On an immediate restart the mouse is active and can move curser.
On animmediate 2nd & multiple restarts the mouse is active.
It's the first cold start when the mouse is inactive.
It happens on both Win 98fe & Win ME on this computer.
Only 1 OS loaded at a time.
Any help would be appreciated.

Is it PS2 or USB?
If it's USB, go into BIOS and enable "USB mouse and keyboard support".

It's an USB with an adapter for PS2 which I'm using because I'm trying out Linux as a 2nd OS & it seems to me that more complications crop up in Linux with USB.
Thanks for the response........

If you installed special software to run that particular trackball, try uninstalling it & using Windows builtin support.

Just out of curiousity, does it function fine at 1st boot, if the 1st boot is to Safe Mode? That might point to a driver issue.

And - do you have the IRQ assignments set manually in your Bios, or to "Auto" with ACPI doing the work? If you're set manually, try Auto & see what happens. If you've currently answered "NO" to the "Plug & Play OS?" question in the Bios, you can try switching to "Yes" & see if Windows fares any better than the Bios in getting the mouse right on the 1st try.

Most of these are guesses - I haven't seen a trackball in years. And my memory isn't as good as it used to be.
Best of luck

[p.s. . . . just noticed that you're over in Chatsworth --> I lived there a few years & still visit my Aunt & Uncle who are over near Lurline & Devonshire, about a block or two from the high school - hmmm - I guess I'm assuming a lot = now that I think about it, there are probably a few Chatsworths: I'm talking about the one about 5 miles from Woodland Hills here in L.A. county]
