Good or bad?
I partition my drive with a 3.4gb then the rest.
On the 3.4gb with the OS I have 470megs left. Is that good? or too little? Also you know how The OS Has the Cookies and faverites and whatnot. could I move that to a different drive or is that impossible. or the My music and what not.

As a rule of thumb I try to keep the partition Windows is on at least 20% free.

I think it's too little. I'd go for a Gig extra, that's what I have for my Win 98.

I think you are fine. Just move the temp internet folder to reduce fragmentation and the risk of too little space on that partition.
Depending on what you do, what apps you run, you might set the swapfile to say 300 max and min. That may free up some drive space. You can also move the swapfile to the other partition. I do mine like this: 1.5 gig swap and temp part, 2.5 gig os, 25 gigs games, 8 gigs utes/apps, last (1 or 2 gigs) bit of drive for junk and download area. Just the way I do it. Places the swap on the fastest part of the hard drive. A good thing. |

How big is your HD?
If it's XP, then most of the guys have allocated at least 6GB-10GB of HD space for the system partition. Of course, it depends on whether you install programs on the boot drive and how you manage your System Restore points - which can take up a lot of room. |

You don't say what OS. But for me, 4G was not enough for XP Pro. I had to use Partition Magic to up it to 8G. I load all programs and apps to another partition.

4GB is not nearly enough for XP Pro, my 5GB partition is making me look silly. Its not just temp files etc; I mean realistically you are looking at abt 200MB/user on cache files.
The bigger issue is hotfixes, SP files, updates etc that will chew thru your space. |

and also is there a free alternitive to Partition MAgic?
Its a 60Gig HD. 3.5gb partition and the rest is partition. about 400mb left on the 3.5gb partition and about 45gb on the other. Is there a chance of datalost and what are the chances? Last edited by Fastfly; 01-17-2003 at 04:14 PM. |

I did not have any data loss with Partition Nagic. It's very easy to use, but as a precaution I backed up anything I thought I would need before starting. I don't know of any free software that will do it. If you decide to get Partition Magic, www.directdeals.com has version 7 OEM for $33.00.

Yes you can byt you will lose anything that is on the affected partitions. Partition Magic works great. I think there may be some free utilities that can move partitions but I haven't used any of them.
