Problems while installing

Hi,

My computer got screwed while I was trying to install windows 2000. In the process, it had to reboot during which it got hanged.Right now even the keyboard is not working, basically its not booting also.

Even when I am trying to boot with a bootable floppy, it asks me to press enter after inserting the 2nd floppy, but because the keyboard is not working, I am not able to press enter and so am not able to boot it completely.

I don't know if my keyboard got screwed up, should I change the keyboard? Motherboard?

format my hard disk?

Could some body help me with this.

Thanks
Anu.

Hi anu and welcome to the PCM forums!

What are your system specs?

Could be bad ram but we need to know the sys specs to provide a more accurate diagnostic.

timer/format

there should be a timer when you try to boot the machine, waiting to select windows 2000 for you. Try letting it boot on its own, and if not, 1 of 2 things. If you have a usb keyboard, you must enable this in the bios before boot. If this doesn't help, I suggest you format the disk with maktor blast 2 plus or something of that nature. LaTeR...

If your keyboard is plugged in to the usb port then try it plugged in to the ps2 port with the little green adapter that came with the keyboard.
If not then I would reformat.

those little usb/ps2 adaptors are useful, USB does not get loaded with dos and bootdisks so as you exdperienced the good old fashioned ps2 is needed at first

You can workaround USB keyboard problems by enabling legacy support for USB keyboard from within your BIOS.

Hi Anu:

Most BIOS systems have support to use USB keyboards, but usually by default they let the USB devices' recognition and usage be determined by the operating system; hence you cannot use your keyboard before your OS loads. While this isnt an issue if you setup your OS from the CD, it becomes a hassle sometimes when using floppy disks.
When you boot, press DEL to enter into your BIOS settings. Once there look for a setting that says:
USB Keyboard support or Legacy Keyboard support; it might be set to 'OFF' or 'By OPERATING SYSTEM' ; change it to ON or 'By BIOS'. This might sometimes be tucked away in the Integrated Peripherals section of your BIOS.

HTH
