Networking XP - Help
I just recently purchased XP and am having trouble with networking it with my other 2 comps, one has Win 2K and the other has XP Home version.
When I share my files, I can use the other 2 comps to logon to the new computer with Win XP Pro, but the comp with XP Pro, I can't log unto the other 2 comps at all. Can anyone help me out please!!! One other side note, I have a network printer (HP 2100 Laser) and my Win 2K comp cannot see the printer at all. I set the printer to IPX, not using an ip address. Any help would be appreciated thank you. |

Welcome to the forums Abliaya,
Make sure all of the computers have the same WORKGROUP name but different COMPUTER name. Make sure all computers have File/Print Sharing enabled, and have atleast something being shared. WIN2K and XP should be able to detect the Network automaticly when you boot up, if you have made any cable changes, etc Hope that helps! |

As long as the three computers are connected with different IP addresses and Computer names, they should all be able to see each other. Go to start..run, and type in \\ip-address (ip-address being one of the 3 computer's IP) or \\computername (computername being one of the 3 computer's computer name) if you want to see another computer's shared files. Network Neighborhood (My Network Places) doesn't always work to good.

i had XP home and it had some serious problems networking, first it didnt want to install the NIC, then it would install it, but only with the drivers it thought were best, which wouldnt even make the little gren light come on, then it finally let me install the correct drivers that came with the disk, the NIC was working, but it wouldnt show as active and the switch didnt even recognise it.
Then i did something which im not sure what it was, and it worked, my brother with XP Pro just installed the NIC, the new hardware found box came up and he installed the drivers from A:\ Worked first time no problem, so i quickly changed home for Pro, worked first time like a charm. dont know whether this is relevant, but my experience with XP home and networking isnt nice |
