How Can I Automatically Close All Windows At Same Time in Win98
I often have up to 20 web sites and several applications like Word open at the same time. When I finish my session, I then have to close each window manually. Isn't there any way I can close all my windows at the same time. I have done this on a Mac but can't seem to do it on the PC.

If I remember right it is the windows button (to the right of the right alt key) and M, works in NT4 and XP just do not have a 98 machine right now to test it on

Thank you but the Windows and M key only remove the application windows from the desktop. They still then need to be closed from the taskbar.

ALT and then press the Esc key will close one at a time.
edit: sorry i gave you the wrong info. Try ALT and the F4 key, if you hold ALT and keep pressing the F4 key it will close as many windows as per how many times you press the F4 key.... Last edited by edge345; 01-23-2003 at 03:38 PM. |

There is only one way that I know of. Press CTRL and then select the all windows you want closed by clicking on their buttons in the Task Bar. Then, keeping CRTL pressed, right click any one of the selected windows and click CLOSE. That should close them all at the same time (well one after the other really, but so fast you won't notice.)
Peace. NPP BTW edge345, ALT+ESC only cycles 'tween the open windows, same as ALT+TAB, but without having to go through the menu and selecting the window you want active. |

Thanks, that last way helps somewhat. Too bad there isn't a way of selecting all the windows with one key and then closing them.

To simultaneously close all open windows, hold the shift key and click the X button on the right side of the folders title bar.
this works with win95 may work with 98

Thanks, I tried holding the shift key and clicking on the X button on the right side of the IE Window and it only closed that one window.
And Dan, maybe I'm being a little nitpicking but I sometimes just think about what might be a better way to do things and if there is a function I don't know about to do so. |

Here's a link I thought you might find interesting, it includes most of the keyboard shortcuts for the Windows 95/98/Me versions:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;126449 Unfortunately, I've never noticed one to close all windows at once . . . though I imagine it would be possible to write a script and assign it to a hotkey. There are also some third party utilities (you could browse some such "enhanced Task Managers" over at downloads.com or znet, etc.) . . . it's possible that one of these utilities would have the option to close all open windows at once. Then again, if you're not interested in saving the contents of each open program's workspace, you can just select Shutdown from the Start menu, it will close everything as part of the shutdown process. Best of luck . . . Gary |
