Go into the BIOS of your computer, in the Power Management settings, set ACPI enabled (On).
Restart, reinstall. |

I don't have the problem that Webbie mentioned, but I have saw this post many times on PCMech. I've looked in my power settings several times and I cannot find the ACPI thing.

Go to Power Management in the bios.
Look for ACPI suspend. Check your mainboard manual, it should be on pg.44. |

Hi
I have tried all the suggestions on the site that you advised, and still the computer will not switch off. I am begining to think that I will never sort this problem, do you think that there could be something wrong with the mother board |

Set your board to fail-safe defaults, save and exit.
When windows hangs turn it off at the power switch and get some sleep. All problems look better in the morning. Yes you could have a hardware problem but since this is a powerdown problem everything points straight at ACPI. At least I think it's a powerdown problem. Your comp goes through everything it needs to shut down and then gets to the " it is now safe to shutdown windows" and just hangs, right ? I need to know what you mean by " tried all the suggestions". When you checked Control Panel and My Computer what did you find? All this can wait till Saturday though. See you then. |

Hi Pam 123 Thanks for your reply
I have tried so meny things now that I am not sure what I have done. As I have only xp and my internet connection loaded do you think it would help if i dumped xp loaded win 98, this would prove or disprove if the hardware is ok I could then start again a fresh with your help hopefully Is it easy to remove xp and reload 98 as I have not done that before. I'm off for a couple days so i will get a bit of rest fom this nightmare Cheers Fred W |

Given that XP is a good deal pickier about hardware than 98, no.
But after making sure that your bios is set to it's defaults, and making sure that the default settings in the manual are the same as those the comp shows, you could try reinstalling XP. As Tuf told me when I was fighting a similar problem, you sometimes have to reinstall XP to get powerdown working. Also, edge345 may be on to something about the bios flash but I would save that for last. It's something to do only after contacting Gigabyte Support and getting their explicit advice to do so. Just an odd suggestion; when you get back go over to www.pcpitstop.com and run their diagnostic on your computer. You have to register at the site but it's free and it's accurate. The results will give you a better idea of what's going on. Enjoy the weekend away from your computer. |
