Hi nigel,

Welcome to PC Mechanic !!

How old is your motherboard?? A lot of older mobos won't allow Windows to install if the BIOS antivirus is Enabled.

Did you overclock the computer in the Bios. if so set the bios to default settings. also how much ram does your system have.

Hi nigel,

You say it's an old system - but how old.

Have you disabled the L1 cache or the L2 cache?

Can you tell us what the CPU and motherboard are?

Check that your CPU heatsink is mounted firmly and the CPU fan turning.

If there is a lot of dust in the case and on the CPU, then give the whole lot a good clean with a can of compressed air.

Try booting into Safe Mode to test your Ram. Does himem.sys throw up any errors? Try another stick of Ram.

You could also download Doc Memory to check your Ram

http://www.simmtester.com/

It could be the L2 cache is faulty. With some older systems, you are able to replace it.

I'm going to guess that the 500 chip is an older K6-2 500? Most likely it's time has come to go to the happy circuit grounds beyond.

I can't see any great reason to try to save either the mb or cpu. Athlons, Durons, Celerons, older P4's - all are as cheap as trying to replace the K6-2 or K6-III for that board. With much better results.

The level 2 cache is on the K6-2 or K6-III chip itself, so it's possible that the system RAM isn't at fault . . .

One inexpensive route might be to see if anyone is offering used Socket 7 cpus over on eBay - - or a local shop might have some "pulls" for pocket money (I wouldn't spend over $30-$40 - that same money will bring a 1700+ XP)

Best of luck
. . . Gary
