Laptop freezing

My girlfriend has an IBM Thinkpad Notebook (pentium 3) with Windows 2000 Professional. Her notebook freezes quite often. it seems like every time she puts it down and stops using for a few minutes when she returns it is frozen. When it freezes the only way to shut it off is to unplug the battery. I know this is probably pretty vague, but I was wondering if anyone knew any possible causes of this and possibly a solution to the problem. Thanks

Don't worry RootExposure, some of us are having problems too.

As for your GF's laptop, does it happen only when she stops using it? Has it ever frozen while she's using it?

Getting back to the freezing problem, is there a screen saver set to turn on? You might want to try turning it off. Also, another thing that could be causing the freezing problem is the power managment settings. Try setting the disk to never turn off. Sure, this may use a little more juice, but it may also solve the problem. Good luck!

Don't worry about the multiple post, I got it.

Also, does this happen if you kill all softare running in the background? I had a motherboard monitor progam that locks my desktop PC up.

Why do you need to unplug the battery? If it is just to shut down the computer you can hold the power button down for about 6 seconds and the computer will shut off (at least this works on the laptops I've owned).

It sounds like a Power Management Issue. Have you been to Windows Update with the notebook? Make sure all the drivers are current.

Yes it only seems to happen when she stop using it and puts down. I haven't checked to see if all the drivers have been updated, but i sure will. And nothing is running in the background that hasn't been running in the background since she got it. thanks everyone for all the responses.

Yes, you're not alone, I've Acer Satellite & compaq 1200 Laptops for the company ,both having this problem, when it runs on battery. And , as you 've said, the only way, to get it to shut down is to take out the 'battery'.
I'm quite suprise it happens on a 'IBM'. Thought it was a 'notch' above the rest. Guess I'm wrong.
