Reinstall Win98 Multifunction IDE/PCI Error MSG

A virus killed my Windows 98. I tried to uninstall but Windows 98 was not listed in the Uninstall section of Control Panel. So, I created a boot disk and used it to boot to the Windows 98 CD-ROM. At that point the Windows 98 setup started and seemed to work fine.

I then shut down the system as instructed and restarted. My screen saver came up and then a message came up "reinsert Windows 98 disk" then the message came up "new hardware found", "file msanalog.vxd" and "file msmpu401.drv cannot be found on windows 98 CD-ROM" then it says "insert CD-ROM in selected drive and click ok" I chose skip from all of the options, then it says the same thing over again. Then I chose cancel. Then all my ICONs come up on my desktop. My orignal software ICONs are there.

Can someone tell me what these files are and where I can find them? I am assuming that I will need them. "msanalog.vxd and msmpu401.drv".

Also, my Internet Explorer Internet connection doesn't work any longer. My other software that I had installed prior to the reinstallation of Windows seem to be working.

I again shut my system down all the way and started over. Then it says that I did not shut my system down correctly and it is doing a scandisk. System is loading up and seems to be working okay. Now I get the message, "please insert the disk labeled Windows 98" and it gives the same error messages about the files "msanalog.vxd and msmpu401.drv" cannot be found.

I am going to go into Windows and look on the Windows 98 diskette to try to find the files using Start/Find Files. I cannot find the CD-ROM Drive Letter D: or E:. Only A: and C: is showing up. I don't have the CD-ROM Installation Disk and I don't know what brand the CD-ROM is...all it says on the front is Compact Disc. Is there a way to find out which one it is???? And where I can find the drivers??????

I also just found out that the "msmpu401.drv" file is a sound card driver. I have the diskette but I cannot install the drivers until I register but I can't register until I get Internet Explorer to work. At this point I am trying to make that a separate problem.

If anyone has any suggestions/solutions to any of the above problems, please do submit them. I would really appreciate the assistance.

Hey, elephantsfly, it is not really related to your issue, but you can edit your sig to make your link a working link. Just add the {URL}http://www.whenelephantsfly.com{/URL}.

Just replace the {} for [].

Did you do anything to eradicate the virus first? What virus was it?

Is this a home-built or store-bought major brand PC?

What anti-virus program do you have? (if any)

Do you have backups of your personal data in case a full, clean install is necessary?
