Does the sound just stopped working, or has it never worked?
Dumb question but, have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers? When you open the Device Manager, do you see any yellow mark?

(while we wait for your answers to Nuke's questions, here's a quick try . . .
Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Device Manager . . . click on the + next to "sound, video, and game controllers" ... click on the sound devices listed and then click on Remove . . . then reboot - the New Hardware Found wizard will try to redetect the sound devices and find the drivers if they are still there on your hard drive. If no luck, you can try searching your hard drive with Windows Explorer for folders/files that start with ESS. Your BioStar M5SAA has an Ess chip onboard of some sort, I believe it's called the "Solo 1" (you might be able to find a driver if you can read the chip # --- is it the ESS 1938?. . . or ? ) I don't have a link for the driver handy - the Biostar site in the US didn't list a driver for that socket 7 board. The Tawain site might. But I've got some system work at the moment. I'll check back later . . . Gary [p.s. ... by golly the Tawain site did have one. Here's a download page to go to: http://www.biostar.com.tw/support/driver/sound.php3#ess ] Last edited by GaryRouth; 01-26-2003 at 12:15 AM. |

Try this:
1) Remove the sound devices in Device Manager 2) Remove the yellow exclamation marked "Other" devices in Device Manager 3) Look to see where the download placed the drivers (I'm guessing it's a self-extracting file) 4) Reboot, and point to the drivers download location when prompted by the New Hardware wizard. If the download has it's own installation program, use that as step 3. Best of luck . . . Gary [. . . hmmm - and you'll need to make sure that you got the right file when you downloaded. There are three versions: one for Win9x, one for Win98SE & Win2000, and one for WinNT4. If you have Win98se you can try either the 1st or the 2nd file.] |
