XP and the BSOD
Hello all.
My computer (running Windows XP) occasionally comes up to a blue screen saying ther was a problem and my computer had to be shut down. I restart and the blue screen re-appears. I've tried starting in Safe Mode. Safe Mode with Networking (this and another computer are networked, the problem has occurred before the network aswell), Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Last Known Good Configuration, and they all come up with this blue screen. Heck I've even tried reinstalling windows and it ran through the start up things then when it says 'Setup is Starting Windows' the blue screen came on. A while later windows decides to work and I'm in. This is always the case. Does anybody know what's happening? This computer is an old IBM Aptiva 30A running: AMD K6/2 533 Mhz processor. 196 Mb SDRAM. 10GB HDD. Teac 32x Read 4x Write 4x Rewrite CDRW. On board video/sound/lan. Many thanks in advance. |

It's not the same as win9x. The default is auto-restart (which was annoying) so I thought a BSOD would be better. I get the error, save my work and restart. I set the BSOD and it just shuts the computer down apart from that one message. It's annoying.
But yes there is a BSOD (and problems with XP) unfortunatley. |

Hi poloktim,
Sounds like a RAM/memory problem. Got spares you can swap in to test with? Plus, it's an older system that's using a CPU that's known for cache problems. Try disabling the on-chip cache. Cricket

Nah it's not the ram (oops sorry forgot to mention). I replaced that a while ago thinking that could be it, the same problems still occur. I swear it's evil.
I'll try that then... how? |

Disabling that on chip cache would be done in your BIOS.

Nope didn't work.
It only really occurs whenever a CD is being burnt (that is data/audio cds being made). Whenever a copy happens it's fine. It's happened a few times other than that. But mainly then. |

What CD burning program are you using? Is it a packet writing program that's causing the problem? What is the exact error message in the blue screen? Do you have more than one CD burning program on your computer? Have you disabled the built in WinXP CD burning program? Cricket

Sorry, it does occur in times other than that, but everytime that's tried.
We use Nero to write data to CDs (and to copy them). We use Windows Media Player to write Audio CDs. We haven't disabled the WinXP CD Burning Program. 'The System encountered an error and needed to be Shutdown.' Then it says if there are drivers listed disable them. Restart your computer in Safe Mode if necessary. It then shows a list of numbers. 0x0000000047 or something to that extent is the first one. I can't remember the others. I hope this helps. |
