Can't get external modem to work
(I am using Windows XP Pro)
I just installed a Creative Blaster 56K external modem to my computer and Windows XP recognized it correctly and installed a signed driver. However, I cannot dial to my ISP. The modem can be queried, but I get an error when dialing (633 -- see attachment). The modem itself is fine because I can dial from within Linux -- isn't that ironic. I can also dial from my other internal modem. I have tried removing the internal modem, and it still did not work. Any ideas? TIA |

You still have driver remnants from your internal, taking over the dialling of your external.
Open IE, tools, Internet options, Connections tab, and set the dialer to your new modem. |

I don't know what you mean by driver remnants, but the Connections tabs just has info on the dial up connections. I deleted the old connection and created a new one that I associated with the external modem. It did not work.
thanks for the reply |

Remove the internal modem in the control panel in the modem section. shutdown and remove the internal modem from the computer. also check the bios and make sure that any serial ports are not disabled....set them to #1 - 3f8 #2 - 2f8
It sounds like the external moodem is trying to use the same com port that is assign to the internal modem.... |

Have you checked for updated XP drivers for your modem?
Are there any ! marks in device mangler? |

I have tried this and it did not work. also check the bios and make sure that any serial ports are not disabled....set them to #1 - 3f8 #2 - 2f8 They are not disabled (set to auto) and the modem can be queried and works under Linux anyway so that is not a problem. I have also tried setting them to certain parameters and it does not work. It sounds like the external moodem is trying to use the same com port that is assign to the internal modem.... Could be, but it shows up as being in another port? Besides I removed the internal one and it still did not work. reboot: Have you checked for updated XP drivers for your modem? There are no updated drivers Are there any ! marks in device mangler? Nope, no marks thanks for the replies This problem is really annoying... |

I think Windows hasn't loaded all the drivers needed for the modem, or dial-up-networking is corrupted, and/or missing parts as well.
Go into add/remove programs, windows components, communications, and remove DUN. Remove all com ports and modems from device mangler. Unhook the modem. Restart, and let the com ports reinstall. Hook up the modem, restart and install the drivers. Go to Start > Run > and type in: inetwiz Make a new connection to the internet. |

I got it working by selecting the standard 56K modem driver instead of the signed one that Windows recognized... go figure
