error messages
O.S win 98.
Upon boot up. The two I keep getting are: This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down, if the problem persists, contact the program vendor. Then there are 3 boxes that go along with it that say CLOSE, DEBUG, DETAILS. The other one says ! an error has occurred in internet explorer. Internet explorer will now close. If you continue to experience problems, please restart your computer. Can someone please help |

in my humble opinion, it sounds like you have an antivirus (or some other program) running at start up that has a conflict somewhere.
I would check in device manager to see what's running at start up and uncheck what may be the suspect. be sure to write down what you uncheck, in case you want to change your decision. be sure to leave systray (post what's listed if you need advice).... I don't see the need for programs automatically running at start up, they tend to bog down the process...especially antivirus programs. you can always run them after startup. |

[I believe Dan meant to say "check in System Configuration" rather than "device manager" to see what's running at Startup. From the Start/Run box, type "msconfig" - or go through the menus: Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information . . . and from the "Tools" menu, select System Configuration Tool"]
Another quick try might be do try a "repair" of IE - this is also available from the "Tools" menu of System Information, if you have a recent version of IE. Or download the latest Service Pack. Did you install any software just before this problem started? Or hardware? Best of luck . . . Gary |

under the details button: explorer has caused an invalid page fault in module mfc42.dll at 0187:6c3cb55
also when clicking on my computer a message shows up saying: This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shutdown. If the problem persists contact the program vendor. I am a new tech a+ certified i wish the test would have taught how to troubleshoot theses errors. I am fustrated how do you learn to diagnose these? I ran scanreg /fix under dos mode and the computer freezes at 7%. the o.s is win 98 se |

Scanreg not finishing in DOS isn't really a wonderful thing. Especially if it was trying to alter things. Try just a regular run of scanreg (without the /fix) just to see if it will finish. If it does, and you haven't added any vital software or hardware recently, you can try to run scanreg/restore to see if it has a good saved Registry to try.
Even with a decent Registry, though, your computer may have some hardware issues, and/or possibly some driver issues to work on. To test the hardware, you can download & try DocMemory from http://www.simmtester.com to test the DIMMS, and try the diagnostic program for your hard drive (either downloadablbe from the manufacturer's site, or if you bought the drive yourself: it should be on a floppy or CD = DataLifeGuard for Western Digitals, SeaTools for Seagates, PowerMax for Maxtors, etc). And check your temps in the Bios Setup screens (can't hurt to check your Bios settings while in there either - if you're not sure what settings you need, you can try "Save Defaults and Exit" - and the motherboard's Bios will use default settings for the hardware it detects automatically [you can tune for performance later] . . . the temps will be listed under a menu called "PC Health" or "Hardware Monitor" or whatnot. If drivers are a bit askew, try booting into Safe Mode & seeing if the errors disappear while in there. That would indeed make a driver conflict a possibility. My gut feeling is that you might just want to back up what personal data you wish to save, and reformat/reinstall from scratch - you might spend days tracking down the culprit otherwise. Do check the hardware first, though - things will only act up again if it's hardware (bad RAM would be the prime suspect). [Run thorough virus scans on everything regardless of what else you try - especially if you reformat/reinstall - scan your backups before putting the data back in - it's a gigantic pain to get re-infected right away] Best of luck . . .
